In the midst of the Champions Trophy deadlock, BCCI says that there is “no question of accepting it as” when the PCB demands a “hybrid model.”
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly dismissed Pakistan’s demand to implement the same “hybrid model” for ICC events hosted in India that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) previously proposed. Talks between the International Cricket Council (ICC), PCB, and BCCI were held to resolve the ongoing stalemate regarding the Champions Trophy, during which the hybrid model was suggested.
BCCI has declined to send its team to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy, citing security concerns, but it has also rejected the PCB’s request for a hybrid model, asserting that there is no security threat in India to warrant such an arrangement.
According to The Telegraph, the BCCI has conveyed a firm stance to the ICC leadership, creating a new impasse. “BCCI’s position is straightforward—there is no security risk in India, so there is no need for a hybrid model,” the report stated.
Efforts are reportedly underway to find a mutually acceptable solution, with the ICC board expected to meet again soon. However, if the PCB maintains its rigid position, it risks losing its hosting rights for the Champions Trophy next year.
Jay Shah’s Leadership Brings Optimism
Jay Shah officially took over as ICC Chair on December 1, succeeding Greg Barclay, who served since November 2020. Shah, elected unopposed in August, brings a track record of success during his tenure with the BCCI, including media deals and World Cup organization.
Former Australian cricketers have expressed optimism about Shah’s leadership. Lisa Sthalekar praised his role in initiatives like the Women’s Premier League (WPL), saying, “His work with media rights and World Cups has been remarkable. I expect him to support the Test fund and ensure balanced support for all formats, including women’s cricket.”
Aaron Finch, former Australian captain, also commended Shah’s ability to manage the complexities of cricket administration in India and expressed confidence in his capacity to excel at the ICC level.
